How To Sell Your Used Phones | Jun 02, 2018

Selling your used phones is a great way to put extra money in your pocket! You can even use the money you get towards a new phone upgrade, but before you do, there are a few things that are important to keep in mind. In this article, we will discuss what things you should keep in mind in order to make selling your used phones as smooth of a transaction as possible.

Before You Do Anything!

Before you sell your phone, there are a few things that you need to do. These steps should not be skipped over as they can make the difference between you actually making the sale or not.

  1. Make sure you properly reset your phone
  2. I cannot tell you how many times I have met someone to purchase their used phone just to find out that a phone has not been reset properly. Resetting a phone properly assures two important things:

    • Your personal information has been removed from the device and therefore will not be used in any malicious way.
    • The person buying your phone does not get stuck with a device that is locked due to active icloud accounts (for iPhones) or Google accounts (for Android phones).
    • If you do not yet know how to restore your phone properly there is a guide on how to do that for both iPhone and Android by clicking HERE. If you are using a laptop or desktop computer you will also be able to see animated examples that you can follow.

  3. Assess Your Phone’s Condition
  4. Make sure that your phone is in full working condition and if it's not, make sure you know what works and what doesn't work. - It’s important that you can tell the buyer the condition of the phone. A simple assessment will do. Bellow is a simple interactive checklist that you can follow along and check off in order to assess your phone’s condition:

    Basic Functions

    Carrier Signal
    Phone Calls

    External Features

    Charger Port
    Headphone Jack
    Mute Button (if applicable)

    Special Features

    Touch ID
Squeeze Actions (for Pixel 2 and other similar devices)

  5. Make sure your bills are paid!
  6. One of the most annoying things that happen when you buy a used phone is finding out that the phone you bought has an outstanding balance! This means that the phone cannot be used in the network associated with the phone (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, etc) until the previous owner has made all the payments on their account!

The best way to assure that your phone is ready to go to a new owner is to contact your network provider and ask them what you need to do prior to selling your phone. They will let you know if there is anything you need to do.
